Australia Begins AH-64E Apache Flying Operations in Townsville

Airworthiness clearance enables a phased training program for crews.

Overview

  • Defence says the start of flying follows completion of acceptance, airworthiness and assurance activities required for safe operation.
  • Four AH-64E helicopters have been delivered since September 2025.
  • Army pilots now commence a progressive flying program to validate Australian operating procedures and training, supported by the United States and United Kingdom.
  • The aircraft operate from Hamel Lines at RAAF Base Townsville alongside the CH-47F Chinook fleet.
  • The Apaches will progressively replace the Eurocopter Tiger, with full Tiger retirement planned by 2028.
