Overview
- Eleven Mogami-class frigates were selected over Germany’s MEKO A-200 after cabinet’s National Security Committee endorsed the Japanese design on August 4, 2025.
- The first three vessels will be constructed in Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ Japanese yards and delivered by late 2029 to meet accelerated capability timelines.
- The remaining eight frigates will be built at the Henderson Defence Precinct in Western Australia under a strategic shipbuilding agreement.
- Mogami-class ships offer a 10,000-nautical-mile range, a 32-cell vertical launch system and integrated undersea and air-defence capabilities to replace ageing Anzac-class vessels.
- The landmark deal marks Japan’s first major warship export since World War II and solidifies a deepening defence and industrial partnership with Australia.
