Australia and New Zealand Order Recall of Children’s Coloured Sand After Asbestos Detected

Regulators urge an immediate stop to use, with licensed disposal via asbestos professionals.

Overview

  • ACCC and New Zealand’s MBIE announced recalls after laboratory tests found tremolite asbestos in samples of Educational Colours Rainbow Sand and Creatistics Coloured Sand.
  • Products were sold nationally between 2020 and 2025 through retailers including Officeworks, Educating Kids, Modern Teaching Aids and Zart Art.
  • Officeworks removed affected items and, beyond supplier recalls, initiated its own recall of additional Kadink products, while citing an independent assessment that found negligible risk.
  • The ACCC advised consumers to stop using the sand, double‑bag and secure it, avoid general-waste disposal and seek guidance on asbestos waste facilities and refunds.
  • New Zealand’s Ministry of Education told schools and early learning centres to cordon off areas, avoid vacuuming or sweeping and engage licensed asbestos assessors or removalists.
