Overview

  • The final suspect, 17-year-old Rodney Charles Hill, was arrested May 27, completing a series of arrests that began April 30 and concluded with two 15-year-olds detained earlier this month.
  • White was shot on March 9 outside the Chandelier Apartments while confronting thieves attempting to steal his Kia Soul and died the following afternoon after being found in the parking lot.
  • APD investigators used surveillance cameras, license-plate readers and cellphone tracking to link a stolen black Kia Soul abandoned in South Austin and a silver Kia Soul at the scene to the four teens.
  • Evidence recovered at the scene included an expandable baton, a 9 mm casing and rap lyrics on Hill’s phone that appeared to reference White’s slaying.
  • Lead detective Jason Jones warned that armed vehicle thieves pose a growing threat in Austin and urged residents to report thefts rather than confront suspects.
