Austin ISD Votes to Close 10 Schools, Shift Dual Language and Montessori Programs for 2026–27

Trustees sought to plug a budget gap under state turnaround mandates.

Overview

  • The board approved closures of Barrington, Becker, Dawson, Oak Springs, Ridgetop, Sunset Valley and Widén elementaries, Winn Montessori, and Bedichek and Martin middle schools, with International High School also set to close due to low enrollment.
  • Dual language will consolidate so Odom becomes the only campus-wide program, with offerings moved to Sánchez, Pickle and Wooten for phased expansion; Winn Montessori relocates to Reilly, and current students receive priority transfers.
  • District leaders project roughly $21.5–$22 million in savings and a reduction of 6,319 empty seats, saying the plan would erase a reported $19.7 million shortfall.
  • Seven closed campuses carried three consecutive F ratings, so required turnaround plans will shift to receiving schools, with the Texas Education Agency set to rule on the plans by Jan. 23.
  • Trustees recorded split votes on pieces of the package after hours of public comment, and officials signaled additional closure and boundary proposals could return in the spring for a potential fall vote.
