Austin ISD Unveils Updated School Consolidation Plan With Transfer Guarantees and Program Shifts

The update prioritizes continuity for families through guaranteed transfers ahead of a Nov. 20 board decision.

Overview

  • The new draft keeps 13 school closures on the table and redraws attendance boundaries for 98% of campuses, with changes targeted to take effect by the 2026–27 school year.
  • A continuation transfer policy guarantees students can remain at their current school or program by request, sibling transfers are allowed subject to capacity and an application window, and no transportation will be provided for these transfers.
  • Transfers will be approved for rising sixth and ninth graders to follow prior feeder patterns, and staff transfer requests will be prioritized to reduce disruption for families.
  • Pickle, Wooten, Odom and Sanchez would become non-zoned, school-wide Spanish dual-language sites, Wooten would add a Mandarin strand, and temporary English/ESL options would support current students during the transition.
  • Facilities decisions remain fluid as the district pauses spending on the Oak Springs modernization while the draft moves those students to Blackshear, explores relocating Garza High to Martin and the Alternative Learning Center to Garza’s building, reassesses Bedichek to keep it open with new grade/program models, and weighs Zavala or Ortega for the Montessori program.
