Austin ISD Releases Bus Video of Near-Miss After Driver Is Charged With Child Endangerment

Police released bus camera footage to underscore camera-based enforcement that has produced 7,000 stop-arm citations this school year.

Overview

  • Footage shows a commercial truck pass a stopped school bus on the right through the grass as a 12-year-old began to exit, forcing the student to halt and leaving them unharmed.
  • Police identified the driver as 31-year-old Deray Marion, who was arrested on Nov. 19 and charged with child endangerment, a state jail felony punishable by up to two years.
  • The incident occurred Oct. 8 on the 11000 block of Old San Antonio Road with the bus’s red lights flashing and stop sign extended, and an affidavit estimates the truck’s speed at about 50 mph.
  • Investigators used BusPatrol video and GPS from a company-assigned Swim Pure Pool Services vehicle to confirm the driver’s identity, and the employer cooperated.
  • AISD says its BusPatrol-equipped fleet has generated 7,000 stop-arm citations so far this school year, with low recidivism and recent citations issued to Waymo autonomous vehicles.
