Austin Bar Shooting: Third Victim Dies as FBI Probes Possible Terror Link

Officials launched a terrorism review based on items found on the suspect.

Overview

  • Austin police identified the gunman as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Senegal who lived in Pflugerville, and said he was not previously on law enforcement’s radar.
  • Police say Diagne circled Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden in an SUV, fired a pistol from the vehicle, then parked and continued shooting with a rifle before officers engaged and killed him within about a minute.
  • Authorities named the civilians killed as 21-year-old Savitha Shan, 19-year-old Ryder Harrington and, later Monday, 30-year-old Jorge Pederson; at least 14 others were wounded, with several in critical condition.
  • The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and local authorities are conducting a 24/7 investigation that includes reviewing thousands of hours of video and interviewing more than 150 witnesses, while cautioning that motive remains undetermined.
  • Police said the firearms used were legally purchased in San Antonio in 2017, and law enforcement sources reported the shooter wore clothing bearing “Property of Allah” and an Iranian-flag design during the attack.
