Aurora Unveils Industry's First Driverless Truck Lane in Texas Ahead of 2024 Commercial Launch
Driverless lane spans I-45 between Dallas and Houston; commercial-ready terminals to support hauls of over 75 loads per week for pilot customers with round-the-clock operations.
- Autonomous technology developer, Aurora Innovation has announced the opening of a dedicated lane for driverless commercial vehicles in Texas, marking an industry first. The lane spans between its two new terminals in Dallas and Houston.
- The said terminals are designed to support, maintain, and deploy autonomous trucks, with capabilities to operate 24/7, 365 days a year. They already support trucks that haul more than 75 loads per week for pilot customers.
- Aurora's technology, particularly the Aurora Driver, has been integrated into Class 8 trucks and Volvo's rigs. The company acquired LiDAR company Blackmore in 2019, which helped them develop a sensing suite capable of autonomous operation of large trucks.
- The company is working on a new Command Center to further support its round-the-clock operations. The center will house a team of remote specialists who provide guidance to active fleets and dispatchers who oversee truck, trailer, and vehicle operator assignments.
- Aurora is set for a commercial launch in late 2024, with the anticipation of launching an autonomous truck service called 'Aurora Horizon'. The company secured $820 million in funding to aid this initiative.
