Aurora Police Kill Teen After 911 Threat to Open Fire at Gas Station

An outside team is investigating, with police reporting no weapon found at the scene.

Overview

  • Officers responded around 7:30 p.m. to the 200 block of South Havana Street after a caller who police say was the suspect threatened to shoot at officers and inside a business.
  • Three officers confronted the teen outside a Conoco, issued commands, and fired a 40mm less-lethal launcher that officials say had no effect.
  • Police say the teen advanced toward them, one officer fired his service weapon, and lifesaving efforts preceded the teen’s death at a hospital.
  • The person has not been publicly identified; authorities say he is believed to be a 17-year-old white male, and no firearm was located during initial scene processing.
  • The officer is on paid administrative leave as the 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team investigates, and police said mental-health units did not intervene because of the potential for immediate violence.
