Aurora Police Kill 17-Year-Old After 911 Threat, Say No Weapon Found

An outside agency is investigating the shooting and the officer who fired is on paid leave.

Overview

  • Police say the teen called 911 around 7:30 p.m. near a business on South Havana Street in Aurora and threatened to shoot officers and people inside.
  • Three officers confronted the person outside a Conoco gas station and, according to Chief Todd Chamberlain, he kept his hands in his pockets and moved toward them.
  • Officers fired 40mm foam projectiles that police say did not stop him before one officer shot him; the 17-year-old was pronounced dead at a hospital.
  • Authorities report no weapon was found on or near the teen, whom Chamberlain described as a white male, and details so far come from preliminary police statements.
  • The officer who fired is on paid administrative leave as an outside law enforcement agency leads the inquiry, and the scene lies about 2.5 miles from the 2012 theater massacre site.
