Aurora Innovation Launches First Driverless Freight Truck Service on U.S. Roads

The autonomous trucking company begins commercial operations between Dallas and Houston, completing over 1,200 driverless miles with plans to expand further in 2025.

Overview

  • Aurora Innovation has become the first company to operate fully driverless Class 8 trucks for commercial freight on U.S. public roads.
  • The service currently runs between Dallas and Houston with no human safety drivers, supported by Aurora's SAE Level 4 Aurora Driver system.
  • Aurora's trucks have already logged over 1,200 driver-out miles, following three million supervised autonomous miles and 10,000 customer deliveries during testing.
  • Launch customers Uber Freight and Hirschbach Motor Lines are utilizing the service, which aims to address driver shortages and reduce operational costs.
  • Aurora plans to expand its driverless operations to include routes to El Paso, Texas, and Phoenix, Arizona, by the end of 2025.
