Aurora Expands Driverless Truck Fleet to Night Operations and Opens Phoenix Terminal

Testing its rain capability, Aurora is preparing to scale from three night-running trucks to tens of vehicles by the end of the year.

Overview

  • Aurora now operates three driverless trucks logging over 20,000 autonomous miles on the DallasHouston corridor around the clock.
  • The company opened a Phoenix terminal in June to support its 1,000-mile Fort WorthPhoenix route for clients including Hirschbach and Werner.
  • Aurora’s FirstLight lidar detects obstacles over 450 meters away in low light, enabling up to 11-second earlier hazard recognition than human drivers.
  • Each truck carries a human observer at partners’ request, but Aurora Driver remains fully responsible for all driving tasks without interventions.
  • The firm is validating rain-mode to enable all-weather operations and aims to field tens of driverless trucks by year-end and hundreds by the end of 2026.
