Aurora Chances Persist Tonight Across Northern U.S. After Weekend G3 Storm

A fast solar-wind stream from a large coronal hole is keeping geomagnetic activity elevated.

Overview

  • NOAA forecasts a Kp index around 4–5 tonight, giving northern views to parts of Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Maine, with Alaska also favorable.
  • The weekend peak reached G3 ‘strong’ levels with a Kp near 6.7, producing widespread auroras across the Great Lakes, New England and other northern states, with reports extending as far south as Colorado.
  • Forecasters cite high-speed solar wind from a sizable coronal hole as the driver, with recent CME activity noted as a possible contributor to ongoing minor to moderate disturbances.
  • The Met Office expects a chance of visibility for northern parts of the UK tonight under continued fast solar winds, though confidence is low and activity should generally decline in coming days.
  • Best viewing remains from roughly 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. in dark, north-facing locations, and phone cameras using night mode or long exposures can capture colors that may appear faint to the eye.
