Aurora and Peoria Water Tests Reveal Elevated Lead Levels, Triggering Public Notices

Revised EPA testing has prompted municipalities to accelerate lead service line replacements.

Overview

  • Aurora’s Water Production Division found that more than 10 percent of 100 samples collected between January and June exceeded the EPA’s lead action level under new testing protocols focusing on the fifth liter of water.
  • Illinois American Water Co. issued a Drinking Water Notice for all of Peoria after 14 of 103 samples showed lead concentrations above 15 parts per billion.
  • Aurora has removed 2,520 lead service lines since 2018 and is evaluating enhanced corrosion control measures to reduce pipe and plumbing corrosion.
  • Illinois American Water has replaced almost 2,500 lead service lines in Peoria since 2020 and plans to replace about 930 more by year’s end under its replacement program.
  • The Illinois Department of Public Health added 180 ZIP codes across 47 counties to its lead service line list on July 1, expanding state oversight of at-risk areas.
