Aurora and Continental Finalize Design for Autonomous Trucks
Production set to begin in 2027, with plans for driverless operations by end of 2024.
- Aurora Innovation and Continental have finalized the design and architecture of the Aurora Driver, an SAE Level 4 autonomous driving system, with production planned to commence in 2027.
- Aurora currently operates 30 autonomous haul trucks in Texas, making 75 deliveries a week for customers such as FedEx and Uber Freight, with a human operations specialist on board for safety.
- By the end of 2024, Aurora plans to have 19 trucks driving the 240-mile stretch from Houston to Dallas without any human passengers present to oversee their operations.
- Between 2024 and 2025, Continental will manufacture hardware for testing at its new facility in New Braunfels, Texas, then begin scaling up production in 2025, with trucks ready to haul freight ready for delivery in 2027.
- Despite public concerns and scrutiny, Aurora maintains transparent and open communication with regulators, with Aurora CEO Chris Urmson testifying before the US House of Representatives Transportation and Infrastructure Committee about the safety of its technology.
