Augusta Deputy Shot After Gas-Station Robbery as Two Charged, Pursuit Suspect Critically Wounded

The sheriff identified the wounded deputy as Victor Rodriguez, saying he is expected to recover.

Overview

  • Deputies responded around 12:44 a.m. to a reported armed robbery at the BP at 3011 Washington Road, where multiple suspects were said to have held up a victim at gunpoint.
  • During a foot chase near the I-20 overpass, Dalyn Dewayne Elder, 20, fired at deputies, striking Rodriguez twice in the lower torso before being shot by Cpl. Amanda Donald behind nearby businesses.
  • Elder is in critical condition at Wellstar MCG Health and, according to the sheriff, was not involved in the robbery; he faces multiple charges including three counts of aggravated assault on law enforcement.
  • Two others—Ashton Wimberly, 17, and Donte White, 27—have been charged in the robbery, and officials said White also has active robbery warrants in Kentucky.
  • Cpl. Donald was placed on administrative leave as the Regional Force Investigation Team reviews the shooting, while Richmond County detectives lead the robbery probe.
