Overview
- A total solar eclipse will cross a narrow path on 12 August 2026 that includes Greenland, Iceland, northern Russia and parts of Europe while Brazil will not see the total phase.
- Entso-E warned that clear skies could cut European photovoltaic output by up to 9.7 gigawatts and noted solar accounts for about 13% of the region’s electricity supply.
- European transmission operators have opened a dedicated working group and issued operational measures such as control-room alerts, avoiding planned outages and using updated PV forecasts to protect supply.
- Brazilians can follow the event via free live streams from the Observatório Nacional and international agencies, and the country will be able to observe a partial lunar eclipse on the night of 27–28 August that may redden up to 95% of the Moon.
- Observers are urged to use certified solar-eclipse glasses (ISO 12312-2) or #14 welder glass because ordinary sunglasses do not protect the eyes, and follow-up eclipses include an annular event on 6 February 2027 and the next total solar eclipse visible from Brazil on 12 August 2045.
