August Social Security Payments Begin with 50% Withholdings for Overpaid Recipients

The move follows a February inspector general report that uncovered $13.6 billion in unreturned overpayments.

Overview

  • Payments for beneficiaries born on the 1st–10th, 11th–20th and 21st–31st of the month will be issued on Aug. 13, 20 and 27 respectively.
  • Supplemental Security Income checks for September will be disbursed on Aug. 29 because Labor Day falls on Sept. 1.
  • The SSA will withhold half of monthly benefits from individuals who have outstanding overpayment balances under a July policy linked to the OIG findings.
  • As of June 2025, the average monthly retirement benefit was $2,005.05, while maximum payouts range from $2,831 at age 62 to $5,108 at age 70.
  • The Senior Citizens League projects a 2.6% cost-of-living increase for 2026 benefits, with the SSA set to announce the official rate in October.
