August Quakes in Oaxaca and Chiapas Fall Short of Seismic Alert Criteria

Authorities have renewed safety recommendations during continuous monitoring of routine seismic activity.

Overview

  • The Servicio Sismológico Nacional confirmed two M4.1 quakes struck Oaxaca on August 15 and three tremors up to M4.6 hit Chiapas on August 16.
  • None of the recent low-to-moderate tremors met SASMEX’s distance-and-magnitude thresholds, so no public alerts were activated.
  • SSN data show over 21,000 earthquakes have been recorded across Mexico in 2025, most of them minor events linked to plate boundary movements.
  • The U.S. Geological Survey reported 27 quakes above M2.5 in North America and the Caribbean in the past 24 hours, including a M4.0 near The Geysers, California.
  • Protección Civil and UNAM’s Instituto de Geofísica continue to advise people to stay calm, seek secure zones and steer clear of windows, heavy furniture and other hazards.
