Overview
- Official August 2026 data show Spain lost about 162,840 Social Security affiliates, leaving roughly 22,345,226 total contributors and raising registered unemployment by 44,419 to about 2,355,918.
- The government estimates roughly 337,917 foreigners were registered as employed through the extraordinary regularization by 31 August and about 40,000 people from the process had signed up at the national employment service between 1 June and 31 July.
- The regularization both softened the seasonal fall in affiliates and inflated unemployment statistics because many newly regularized people registered as jobseekers for the first time.
- Losses were concentrated regionally and by sector, with Catalunya down about 59,529 affiliates and education shedding roughly 76,535 jobs while services accounted for most of the registered unemployment rise.
- Regional authorities, especially in Catalunya and the Valencian Community, are asking for extra funding and staff for employment offices to handle the new demand and officials will watch whether this summer spike in registrations eases as schools reopen and hiring resumes.
