Overview

  • The company initiated the recall on June 6 after identifying potential Salmonella Enteritidis contamination in 1.7 million dozen brown cage-free and organic eggs.
  • Affected eggs were processed between February 3 and May 15 and carry sell-by dates from March 4 through June 19.
  • Distribution covered nine states—California, Nevada, Arizona, Wyoming, New Mexico, Nebraska, Indiana, Illinois and Washington—and included major retailers such as Save Mart, FoodMaxx, Lucky, Smart & Final, Safeway, Raleys, Food4Less, Ralphs and Walmart.
  • Salmonella Enteritidis contamination can trigger fever, nausea and diarrhea, with serious risks for children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.
  • August Egg Company has diverted eggs to a pasteurizing plant and launched an internal safety review, and it is advising consumers to verify plant codes and carton dates before returning or discarding products.
