August Egg Company Recalls 1.7 Million Eggs Linked to Salmonella Outbreak

The recall follows a CDC investigation after 79 confirmed cases with 21 hospitalizations in seven states since February.

Overview

  • The multistate outbreak has sickened 79 people and hospitalized 21 across Arizona, California, Kentucky, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey and Washington.
  • Recalled eggs were sold at Walmart, Safeway, Save Mart and other major retailers between February 3 and May 15 with sell-by dates extending to June 19.
  • Affected products include brown organic and cage-free eggs packaged under multiple brands with plant codes P-6562 or CA5330 and Julian dates 32 to 126.
  • Salmonella symptoms typically emerge six hours to six days after exposure and most people recover in four to seven days, although young children, seniors and immunocompromised individuals face higher risks of severe illness.
  • The FDA and CDC are advising consumers to check cartons for the specified codes and dates and to discard or return any recalled eggs while investigations continue.
