August Egg Co. Recalls 1.7 Million Dozen Eggs Linked to Salmonella Outbreak

Following a CDC and FDA investigation into cases spanning seven states, the company has halted fresh egg sales to divert its products for pasteurization

Overview

  • The recall covers 1.7 million dozen brown cage-free and certified organic brown eggs produced at August Egg Company’s California plant
  • Eggs distributed from February 3 to May 15 carried sell-by dates from March 4 to June 19 and reached nine states through retailers including Walmart, Safeway, Raley’s and Save Mart
  • The CDC has linked the recalled eggs to 79 infections and 21 hospitalizations in seven states, with 63 cases in California and additional illnesses reported in Nevada, Washington, Arizona, New Jersey, Nebraska and Kentucky
  • Consumers should look for plant codes P-6562 or CA5330 and Julian dates 32 through 126 on cartons and are urged to discard or return any affected eggs
  • August Egg Company has rerouted all shell eggs to an egg-breaking facility for pasteurization and is conducting an internal review to strengthen safety controls
