August Border Encounters Near Record Low as Zero‑Parole Claim Faces Scrutiny

House Republicans move to codify the enforcement strategy following the latest CBP figures.

Overview

  • CBP reported 26,197 total encounters nationwide in August, slightly above July’s modern low of 24,598 but far below recent years’ peaks.
  • Border Patrol averaged about 204 apprehensions per day between ports of entry, with 6,319 arrests at the southwest border, reflecting a 96% decline from the prior administration’s daily average.
  • DHS and CBP said no migrants were paroled into the interior for four straight months, while TRAC-published CBP data show more than 13,000 releases at ports of entry earlier this year, highlighting definitional differences.
  • DHS announced more than 2 million removals or self-departures since Jan. 20, including roughly 1.6 million voluntary departures and over 400,000 deportations.
  • CBP said combined drug seizures rose 9.2% from July, including 755 pounds of fentanyl, as House Homeland Security leaders cite the results to push legislation and schedule an Oct. 8 threats hearing with FBI Director Kash Patel and NCTC Director Joseph Kent.
