Overview

  • The RAC forecasts 17.6 million car journeys over the August bank holiday, based on a 2,080-person survey extrapolated to the 34 million licensed cars in the UK.
  • Traffic is projected to peak with about 3.0 million trips on Friday and 3.4 million on Saturday, easing to 2.4 million Sunday and 2.7 million Monday, plus 6.1 million flexible leisure trips across the period.
  • Inrix expects the worst delays on the M5 between junctions 15 and 23 near Bristol and Bridgwater (40+ minutes on Friday and Saturday) and more than 30 minutes on the M20 in Kent on Friday, a key route to Dover and Folkestone.
  • Network Rail will carry out 261 engineering projects, with no long-distance services between London King’s Cross and Peterborough on Sunday and no trains between Birmingham New Street and Birmingham International from Saturday to Monday.
  • LNER and Lumo services on the East Coast Main Line will be disrupted, Avanti West Coast will run a reduced and amended timetable at Euston with diversions for Avanti and CrossCountry, and London Northwestern trains will operate only to and from Birmingham International; travellers are urged to check routes and times in advance.
