August 12 Solar Eclipse Crosses Spain as Germany Sees Up to 90% Partial

Final safety guidance is being issued because the eclipse peaks near sunset and the Perseids meteor shower will peak the following night.

Overview

  • The eclipse will produce a narrow path of totality across parts of Greenland, Iceland, northern Spain and northwest Portugal while much of Germany will see a strong partial eclipse with regional maxima around 84 to 90 percent.
  • In Germany the partial event occurs in the evening close to sunset, so observers need an unobstructed western horizon or elevated sites to see the maximum phase before the Sun sets.
  • Officials and experts warn that looking at the Sun without proper protection can cause permanent eye damage and advise only ISO EN 12312-2 / CE‑marked eclipse glasses or indirect methods such as a camera obscura or projection.
  • Planetariums, observatories and public venues are staging programs and livestreams and some are distributing certified glasses, while Spain’s totality corridor is drawing heavy tourist demand and last‑minute shortages of certified eyewear have been reported.
  • The Perseids peak the night of August 12–13 under a new moon, creating unusually dark skies when observers in dark locations could see dozens of meteors per hour, and the next total solar eclipse visible from Germany will not occur until 2081.
