Aug. 2, 2027 Total Solar Eclipse Confirmed With 6 Minutes 23 Seconds of Totality

Only a narrow track through southern Spain, North Africa, the Middle East will see totality, prompting agencies to urge safe viewing or official livestreams.

Overview

  • NASA and the USNO confirm the path of totality crossing Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Yemen after entering from the Atlantic near the Strait of Gibraltar.
  • Maximum darkness occurs near Luxor, Egypt, lasting 6 minutes 23 seconds and projected to be the longest total solar eclipse until 2114, according to Space.com.
  • In Spain, totality reaches Cádiz for about 2 minutes 55 seconds and Málaga for about 1 minute 53 seconds, with the eclipse beginning around 10:50 a.m. local peninsular time.
  • Mexico lies outside the track and will not see even a significant partial view because the event happens before sunrise there; viewers should plan to travel or follow official livestreams.
  • NASA stresses safe viewing with ISO 12312-2–certified solar filters and warns never to look directly at the Sun.
