Audit Puts French State’s Paris 2024 Bill at €6.6 Billion After Security Underestimates

Auditors say the higher figure reflects underestimated security needs rather than overspending.

Overview

  • The Cour des Comptes reports €3.02 billion in state operational spending, including €1.44 billion for security, and €3.63 billion for infrastructure.
  • Security needs were long under-forecast, with about €1.7 billion in temporary measures and €300 million in longer-term costs, the auditors said.
  • When the roughly €2 billion security bill and about €1.35 billion in Games-related transport are counted, public-related costs exceed €10 billion.
  • Infrastructure delivery was highlighted as a success, with Solideo handing over 70 projects on time within the €1.68 billion legal budget envelope.
  • The organizing committee’s €4.4 billion program was largely privately financed and closed with a €75 million surplus, as auditors judged short-term economic gains modest and found no budgetary overspending.
