Audit Finds 12 Control Failures in Minnesota Governor’s Office

State officials say most fixes are in place following an audit that reported no financial misuse.

Overview

  • The Office of the Legislative Auditor released a performance audit Tuesday covering July 1, 2022 through Dec. 31, 2024.
  • Auditors cited 12 deficiencies, including poor receipt management for events at the residence, outdated inventory records, payroll mistakes such as incorrect retroactive pay, late vendor payments, and weak timesheet oversight.
  • The report urges stronger controls over receipts, approvals and inventory, recovery of improper payments, and better documentation for reimbursements and parental leave eligibility.
  • The Governor’s Office says it has implemented the recommended changes and resolved 11 of 12 findings, noting many issues stemmed from 2022 and that the audit found no malfeasance.
  • Auditors reported no issues with the salaries of the governor, lieutenant governor or staff assigned to the 2024 presidential campaign, and Republican leaders criticized the findings as evidence of broader accountability problems.
