Auburn to Retire Cam Newton’s No. 2 Jersey on Oct. 11 vs. Georgia

The honor places the 2010 Heisman winner alongside Pat Sullivan, Bo Jackson and Terry Beasley as one of only four Auburn players with a retired number.

Overview

  • Auburn announced the decision on Aug. 18 and released a video of athletic director John Cohen and deputy AD Tim Jackson informing Newton.
  • The jersey retirement ceremony is scheduled for halftime of the Georgia game at Jordan-Hare Stadium on Oct. 11.
  • Newton’s lone Auburn season in 2010 produced a 14-0 record, SEC and BCS titles, the Heisman Trophy and 51 total touchdowns with 2,854 passing yards and 1,473 rushing yards.
  • No. 2 has not been issued since 2010, when Newton and cornerback Aairon Savage both wore it, and the retirement formalizes its permanent removal.
  • Newton called the recognition an incredible honor, while coach Hugh Freeze and former star Derrick Brown publicly praised the move and its significance for the program.
