- Auburn released a video of athletic director John Cohen and deputy AD Tim Jackson informing Newton of the honor, followed by a statement in which he called Auburn home.
- The ceremony is scheduled during the home game against Georgia at Jordan-Hare Stadium on Oct. 11.
- Newton joins Pat Sullivan (No. 7), Bo Jackson (No. 34) and Terry Beasley (No. 88) in the program’s elite retired-number group.
- No. 2 has not been issued since 2010, when Newton and cornerback Aairon Savage wore it during Auburn’s national championship season.
