Auburn To Retire Cam Newton’s No. 2 Jersey on Oct. 11

The rare honor recognizes the Heisman winner’s 2010 title run.

Overview

  • The ceremony is scheduled during Auburn’s home game against Georgia at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
  • Newton becomes only the fourth Auburn player with a retired number, joining Pat Sullivan (7), Bo Jackson (34) and Terry Beasley (88).
  • Auburn released a video of athletic director John Cohen, with deputy AD Tim Jackson, informing Newton of the decision as he expressed gratitude for the recognition.
  • Newton’s lone Auburn season finished 14-0 with SEC and BCS championships, a Heisman Trophy and a sweep of major awards after totaling 2,854 passing yards, 30 passing TDs, 1,473 rushing yards and 20 rushing TDs.
  • No. 2 has not been worn at Auburn since the 2010 national championship season, with the retirement making that status official.
