ATU Seizes 374 Discount Transit Cards in Lima Crackdown

The agency says surprise checks will continue to deter identity-based fare fraud, protecting discounted rides for eligible users.

Overview

  • ATU, which has stepped up surprise checks this year, reports 374 preferential cards seized across 34 targeted operations at Central, Plaza de Flores, Naranjal and Matellini stations.
  • Most cases involved people posing as university students, with 348 detections, plus 17 posing as schoolchildren and 9 using passes for people with reduced mobility.
  • Misuse triggers immediate confiscation and loss of the half-fare benefit, with suspensions up to one year for school cards and up to six months for university cards.
  • During the suspension the rider must pay the full trunk-line fare of S/3.20, while the retained card is sent to the Card Service Center at Estación Central for recovery of the plastic and any stored balance.
  • ATU stresses these student and reduced-mobility cards are personal and nontransferable and says controls will continue to stop lending to relatives or friends and to safeguard the system’s finances.
