Attendance Allowance: Pensioners With Sight Loss Could Claim Up to £441 a Month

New coverage urges eligible older people with vision problems to check if they can receive the tax-free payment.

Overview

  • The DWP benefit pays £73.90 or £110.40 a week for daily living needs, usually paid every four weeks as about £295.60 or £441.60.
  • Official figures show nearly 1.6–1.7 million people receive Attendance Allowance, including 50,993 claimants for visual disorders as of August 2024.
  • Eligibility is for people over State Pension age who need help or supervision with personal care; there is no mobility component and you do not need a carer to qualify.
  • The payment is tax-free and not means-tested, it does not affect the State Pension, and it can increase entitlement to Pension Credit, Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction.
  • Claims can be made online or by post, applicants should detail how their condition affects daily life, and support is available from Citizens Advice; people in Scotland apply for Pension Age Disability Payment instead, and you cannot claim if you already get PIP or DLA for care.
