Overview

• On the night of August 7–8, unknown intruders used wire cutters to breach the fence, pried open the raccoon’s interior door and cut wire mesh in a failed theft attempt at Westküstenpark.
• Park director Alexander Ehrhardt reported the raccoon escaped unharmed but suffered significant stress during the break-in.
• Staff repaired the damaged enclosure on Friday and plan to reopen the exhibit Saturday, with the raccoon soon to return to its original habitat.
• Kreis Nordfriesland police have launched an investigation into the targeted intrusion and are seeking witnesses to the incident.
• The incident follows earlier this year’s glass-smashing break-in at the park’s seal exhibit, which led to additional surveillance cameras that the thieves bypassed.
