ATSB Probes Fatal Training Helicopter Crash Near Bankstown Airport

The safety bureau says the malfunction appears to have begun at higher altitude.

Overview

  • A Robinson R22 owned by Bankstown Helicopters crashed about 1:30pm Friday in a Birch Street carpark outside Bankstown Airport, killing the instructor and injuring a 19-year-old student pilot.
  • ATSB investigators arrived Saturday to map the site, examine wreckage and records, and said a preliminary report is expected within eight weeks.
  • Chief Commissioner Angus Mitchell said the helicopter departed controlled flight at altitude before its final descent, with contact with trees and wires occurring in the last moments.
  • Dashcam video shows the aircraft dropping through trees onto a parked car as bystanders pulled the student from the wreckage before he was taken to Liverpool Hospital.
  • NSW Police established a crime scene and, along with the ATSB, appealed for any video or witness information, and the hospital said Saturday the student is in a stable condition.
