ATP Approves WBGT Heat Rules for 2026: Cooling Breaks, Suspensions and Roof Closures

The policy responds to high-profile 2025 heat incidents by setting precise thresholds to pause play or close roofs.

Overview

  • The rules take effect for ATP Tour best‑of‑three events in 2026, while the four Grand Slams continue under their own heat protocols.
  • A 10‑minute cooling break can be requested between the second and third sets if WBGT readings exceeded 30.1°C during the first two sets, with showers, clothing changes, hydration, coaching and medical checks permitted.
  • Outdoor play will be suspended when WBGT reaches or exceeds 32.2°C for more than 15 minutes, stopping at the end of the current game or tie‑break and resuming only after 20 minutes below 30.5°C.
  • Events with retractable roofs must close them when WBGT hits 32°C or the court surface reaches 45°C, and matches will then be completed indoors.
  • For doubles, players receive an extra 90 seconds for hydration at WBGT of 31°C or higher, and the tour plans to monitor implementation during the Australian summer.
