Atocha Canopy Renovation Enters Final Stretch With 90% of Demolition Complete

The EU-funded project focuses on restoring the landmark structure to improve passenger flow and accessibility.

Overview

  • Adif AV reports demolition, structural reinforcements and interior preparation under the Puerta de Atocha–Almudena Grandes canopy are about 90% complete within a program exceeding €67 million backed by NextGenerationEU.
  • Work continues on an underground through-station with four tracks and two platforms to connect the high-speed tunnel between Atocha and Chamartín.
  • The northern Cercanías throat is being reconfigured to a 4+4+2 layout, with track 10 set as a direct route to and from Embajadores and track 8 assigned as a siding for line C‑5.
  • Plaza de Carlos V is being rebuilt with two large staircases, diagonal ramps and landscaped areas to strengthen pedestrian links from the Prado–Recoletos corridor and nearby streets.
  • Interior upgrades remove the north slab to open sightlines and add new vertical circulation, evacuation routes and a terrace, while completed measures include relocating police and ticketing, modernizing the Atocha telecommunications center and restoring historic buildings.
