Atlantic Forest Deforestation Falls 42% in Q1 2025 as Crackdown Adds R$116 Million in Fines

Daily satellite surveillance is translating into fines that require restoration plans for areas cleared illegally.

Overview

  • Brazil’s Atlantic Forest lost 8,109 hectares in the first quarter of 2025, a 42% decrease from a year earlier, while detected incidents rose slightly to 1,047 from 1,022.
  • The nationwide Operação Mata Atlântica em Pé identified 12.3 thousand hectares deforested and levied R$116 million in penalties.
  • Paraná ranked fourth in area inspected, with 1,377 hectares flagged and R$9 million in fines, trailing Minas Gerais, Piauí and Ceará.
  • Bahia, Minas Gerais and Piauí led first‑quarter losses; deforestation increased in Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Paraíba and Santa Catarina and fell sharply in Piauí and Mato Grosso do Sul.
  • Inspectors revisiting past cases found continued irregular planting instead of recovery, and authorities said responsible parties must submit regeneration plans as daily monitoring continues.
