Atlantic Air Keeps European Russia Mild as Siberia Braces for Severe Cold and Snow

A persistent southwesterly flow from the unfrozen Atlantic is driving the unusual early‑December warmth.

Overview

  • Hydrometcenter head Roman Vilfand says Moscow will miss winter conditions for the next 7–8 days with no lasting snow cover and above‑freezing days.
  • Phobos forecasters expect Moscow to be cloudy and largely dry on Friday with daytime highs around +1 to +4°C and similar conditions through the weekend.
  • Vilfand attributes rare +8–10°C positive anomalies in southern Western Siberia to an incursion of Atlantic air that seldom reaches those latitudes in December.
  • The Hydrometcenter forecasts a strong cold spell with snow and winds up to 25 m/s in parts of the Siberian Federal District on Dec. 6–8, affecting Krasnoyarsk Krai, Khakassia, Kemerovo and the Republic of Altai.
  • Tomsk authorities issued a four‑day storm warning for frosts down to −43°C and urged residents to avoid out‑of‑town travel, with Novosibirsk and Altai Krai also expecting a sharp drop in temperatures and hazardous conditions.
