Atlanta Police Conclude Brent Hinds Caused Fatal Crash After Traveling 63–68 MPH

Investigators reversed an initial finding against the SUV driver after using intersection video and time‑distance analysis to estimate a speed about twice the limit.

Overview

  • An updated Atlanta Police report released Sept. 4–5 finds Hinds at fault in the Aug. 20 collision at Memorial Drive SE and Boulevard SE.
  • Video-based calculations put the Harley-Davidson’s speed between 63 and 68 mph in a 35 mph zone as it collided with a BMW SUV.
  • An earlier Aug. 28 police report had preliminarily blamed the SUV driver for failing to yield while turning left.
  • Witness accounts conflict on the traffic signal, with the driver saying the light was green and one witness saying it was red, though two witnesses said Hinds was driving fast.
  • Responding officers found Hinds breathing with visible injuries before he died at Grady Memorial Hospital; the SUV driver stayed at the scene and was hospitalized, and no criminal charges have been announced.
