Atlanta Mother Charged After Baby’s Death Ruled Homicide From Alcohol in Bottle

Toxicology showing a 0.179 blood-alcohol level prompted a homicide ruling that led to charges.

Overview

  • Police say 37-year-old Omayrilin Colon was arrested Jan. 29–30 on murder and first-degree cruelty to children charges and is held without bond after waiving a hearing.
  • First responders found the 2–3-month-old unresponsive at a Perry Boulevard NW residence in mid-October, and he was later pronounced dead at a pediatric hospital.
  • The Fulton County Medical Examiner reported the infant’s blood-alcohol concentration at 0.179 and determined the death was a homicide based on toxicology.
  • An arrest affidavit alleges the baby’s bottle was intentionally filled with alcohol, while Colon told investigators she had only given her son formula.
  • Medical officials concluded the alcohol was directly swallowed from the bottle; authorities have not disclosed a motive or the type of alcohol, and Georgia law allows life imprisonment or the death penalty for murder.
