At UN, Trump Threatens Tariffs on Russia, Presses Europe to Cut Energy Purchases

Washington portrays the tariff threat as leverage to broker a ceasefire.

Overview

  • In a UN General Assembly address, President Donald Trump said the United States is ready to impose a "very tough round of powerful tariffs" on Russia if it refuses a ceasefire in Ukraine.
  • He urged European governments to adopt identical measures and to stop buying Russian oil and gas, arguing those purchases finance the war.
  • Trump publicly labeled China and India the main sponsors of Russia’s war because of their continued energy imports from Moscow.
  • Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States is acting as a mediator between Kyiv and Moscow and cautioned that new sanctions now could weaken that role and prolong the conflict.
  • UN Secretary-General António Guterres avoided explicitly naming Russia as the aggressor in his opening remarks, and a Trump–Zelensky meeting on the Assembly’s sidelines was scheduled.
