At Tempelhofer Feld Action Day, Berlin Officials Urge Extra Care for Children

The appeal follows a plan to restore daytime 50 km/h on parts of the main road network after improved air readings.

Overview

  • Traffic Senator Ute Bonde called on Berliners to be especially attentive and considerate toward children at the start of the school year.
  • An action day at Tempelhofer Feld taught 220 second-graders from nine schools how to move safely in traffic through playful exercises.
  • Education Senator Katharina Günther-Wünsch said the school route should be safe for all children and recommended bright clothing and reflectors for better visibility.
  • The event was organized by Bürgerstiftung Berlin as a recurring initiative and took place for the third time.
  • Bonde has drawn criticism from the Greens and some SPD politicians as 23 main roads are set to return to daytime 50 km/h under a new air-quality plan that deems many earlier 30 km/h limits no longer justified.
