At Limerick Garda Trial, Texts Show Councillor Asked Superintendent to 'Sort' Speeding Ticket

Forensic phone evidence details exchanges linking Eamon O’Neill to requests on traffic cases during the trial’s fifth week.

Overview

  • Jurors were shown messages in which Fine Gael councillor Liam Galvin sent his fixed charge notice to then superintendent Eamon O’Neill and asked him to "sort" it.
  • The exchanges referred to a 2017 detection at 142km/h in a 120km/h zone near Patrickswell and included replies from O’Neill such as "Have I ever let you down kid" and later "Is sorted."
  • The court also saw an image of a council motion from Galvin seeking a review of GoSafe van locations, which he sent to O’Neill with the caption "Ha ha ha".
  • A Garda forensic analyst testified about recovering the conversations from O’Neill’s phone seized in May 2019, and Galvin is not charged or under arrest in the investigation.
  • O’Neill and four serving gardaí plead not guilty to 39 counts alleging interference in road traffic prosecutions, and O’Neill’s prepared statement says such involvement reflected longstanding discretion permitted by internal guidance.
