At Least 7 Dead After UPS Cargo Plane Crashes Shortly After Takeoff in Louisville

The NTSB has taken charge of the probe at a wide, secured impact zone near UPS Worldport.

Overview

  • The MD-11 operating as UPS Flight 2976 to Honolulu went down minutes after takeoff near Fern Valley Road and Grade Lane by Louisville’s UPS Worldport.
  • Gov. Andy Beshear said at least seven people are dead and 11 injured, stressing the counts are preliminary and could rise.
  • Louisville’s mayor said the three crew members are presumed dead and that four of the confirmed fatalities were on the ground.
  • Fire crews contained a large blaze, reported secondary releases at a nearby petroleum recycling facility, and authorities issued shelter-in-place orders and disrupted airport operations.
  • Investigators are collecting recorders and other evidence with FAA support after early tracking data showed the jet reached only about 53–55 meters in altitude, and Boeing has offered technical assistance.
