Overview

  • The AFGE union says roughly 600 CDC employees have been told their terminations are permanent, with an HHS official confirming notices were sent but not providing a count.
  • Employees were told the separations took effect Monday, Aug. 18, following notices that began going out this week.
  • About 100 of the cuts hit violence-prevention roles, including teams working on rape, child abuse and teen dating violence, with staff who supported international tracking of violence against children also affected.
  • Units spared by a Rhode Island judge’s preliminary order include programs focused on smoking, reproductive health, environmental health, workplace safety, birth defects and sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Affected areas reported by employees and union officials include violence prevention, the Freedom of Information office and equal employment opportunity, while the union criticized what it called a staggering lack of transparency and noted many staff had been on paid administrative leave since April.
