At Least 350 Evacuated From Everest Camps as Nepal Landslides Kill Dozens

Access to Tibet’s Everest scenic area is suspended pending large-scale rescue operations.

  • Nearly 1,000 trekkers and climbers were trapped on the Tibetan side of Everest; at least 350 have been evacuated so far, according to Chinese state media.
  • Camps at roughly 4,900 meters saw tents destroyed and roads buried in snow, with rescue teams and hundreds of villagers clearing routes and guiding people to Qudan.
  • Ticket sales for the Everest Scenic Area in Tingri are suspended during the operation, and reports of fatalities among those trapped have not been independently confirmed.
  • In Nepal, floods and landslides have killed at least 43 people, including at least 37 in Ilam, with helicopters, motorboats and police teams conducting rescues.
  • Neighboring India’s Darjeeling district has reported at least 20 deaths from rain-triggered landslides and flooding.
