Overview

  • Authorities report at least 30 fatalities near Adhkuwari on the Vaishno Devi trek, with dozens injured, the yatra halted and some devotees still stranded as searches continue.
  • Indian Army columns, NDRF and SDRF teams, and local administration are conducting evacuations and relief, with an IAF C-130 delivering supplies and helicopters placed on standby.
  • Major rivers and barrages surged past danger marks, including the Ravi at the Modhopur barrage, while the Tawi, Chenab, Ujh and Basanter rose sharply and the Jhelum crossed the flood-alert level at Sangam.
  • Telecom networks suffered widespread outages from damaged optical fibre, key highways and bridges were washed out, and Northern Railways canceled or short-terminated dozens of trains; schools and exams in the Jammu division were suspended.
  • Heavy rain also damaged infrastructure in Himachal Pradesh—washing away stretches of the Manali-Leh and Chandigarh-Manali highways—while Punjab moved to evacuate low-lying areas as releases from major dams swelled the Sutlej, Beas and Ravi.
