At least 16 migrants dead, dozens missing after multiple shipwrecks off North African

  • Ships carrying migrants from Tunisia and other parts of Africa sank in separate incidents off the coasts of Tunisia and Western Sahara.
  • The Tunisian coast guard recovered 11 bodies and rescued 2 people, with 44 still missing after a shipwreck near Sfax.
  • Five bodies were recovered and 189 people rescued when a boat carrying Senegalese migrants capsized near Western Sahara.
  • Hundreds of sub-Saharan migrants remain stranded along the North African coast attempting dangerous sea crossings to Europe.
  • The central Mediterranean route is the deadliest for migrants, with over 1,000 recorded deaths so far this year.
